13 to Life: Werewolf Poetry

The challenge?  Take 3 to 5 pages of 13 to Life and rewrite the passage as a poem....Poem's aren't exactly my strong-suit, but in my quest to totally OWN Shannon Delany's Change is Good—Ask a Werewolf Contest, I've decided to give it my best shot.

While I know all poems aren’t flowery, or rhymie, or sonnets, or haikus…As a reader, I am drawn to the more concrete aspects of prose, rather than the mutability of poetry.  But that’s just me.  And I do know that Shakespeare’s plays are structured poetry—I love the stories, but when I think about writing something like that myself, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it.  Same with Chaucer and Ovid…I can appreciate it to a certain extent…I guess I would compare it to my struggles in learning foreign languages.  I do have a lot of love for the music of language, and while in some aspects my understanding has broadened, and it’s become easier for me, in others ways I still get that feeling of grasping at something beyond my reach.

For this entry, I chose the scene with the Matryoshka (nesting) Dolls.  This is really weird for me, because I can’t judge it, or tell if it’s ok or not; if it’s done, or if I should have spent more time (although this did take me a while)…But I guess it does tell me what I took away from that scene, so maybe it’s ok.  I would definitely be interested in any feedback....You may want to close your eyes now (I know I will!).  :)

Open and Shut

Dolls in a nest
Wolves in their den
Rabbit in the midst

Rabbit loosed
She-wolf undone
Pack released

Puzzle unlocked
Hand of Fate
Fortune untold

Hollow wolf
Open heart
Rabbit in the midst
