The Best (of 2011) Is Yet to Come

Today over at Armchair BEA they're asking us about the best books of 2011.

Best of 2011?  But, I’m not done yet?!?!?!

Everybody get a grain of salt, because I’m always up for a challenge, and will attempt to pick my favorites for the year—but I just want everybody to keep that grain of salt handy, because it’s only May, and the best is yet to come. (and now I totally have that song in my head, so I embedded it at the bottom if anyone wants a listen)

Well, I only had to think about that for about point 2 seconds before I realized that as far as some of my personal favorite authors go, 2011 is pretty super-amazing-fracktastic.  With sprinkles.

I could say that I numbered my favorite authors, entered them into random.org , and came out with this completely random list of my favorite authors, but that would take more effort than listing these titles chronologically:

Collected here for the first time are all of the tales from the land of Tortall, featuring both previously unknown characters as well as old friends. Filling some gaps of time and interest, these stories, some of which have been published before, will lead Tammy's fans, and new readers into one of the most intricately constructed worlds of modern fantasy.

*FABULOUS FABULOUS FABULOUS—A MUST HAVE for every Tamora Pierce fan, a compilation of short stories with a mix of new characters and familiar. (my review)

On Lily Sanderson’s eighteenth birthday she’ll become just a girl—still a mergirl, true, but signing the renunciation will ink Princess Waterlily of Thalassinia out of existence. That leaves plain old Lily living on land, dating the boy she loves, and trying to master this being-human thing once and for all.

Now that Lily and Quince are together, mer bond or not, she’s almost content to give up her place in the royal succession of Thalassinia. But just when she thinks she has everything figured out, the waves start to get rough. Lily’s father sends a certain whirlpool-stirring cousin to stay with her on land. What did Doe do to get herself exiled from Thalassinia and stuck in terraped form, when everyone knows how much she hates humans? And why why why is she batting her eyelashes at Lily’s former crush, Brody?

The seafoam on the raging surf comes when a merboy from Lily’s past shows up—Tellin asks Lily for something that clouds her view of the horizon. There’s a future with Quince on land, her loyalty to the kingdom in the sea, and Lily tossing on the waves in the middle. Will she find a way to reconcile her love, her duty, and her own dreams?

Fins Are Forever, Tera Lynn Childs, June 28, 2011

*FINTASTIC FINSATIONAL FINOMENAL—The SEAquel is even more fun than the original and a perfect summer read!!!

Nastasya has lived for hundreds of years, but for some reason, life never seems to get any better. She left her spoiled, rich girl life to find peace at River's Edge, a safe haven for wayward immortals. There, she learned to embrace River's Edge, despite some drama involving the sexy Reyn, who she wants but won't allow herself to have. But just as she's getting comfortable, her family's ties to dark magick force her to leave.

She falls back into her old, hard partying ways, but will her decision lead her into the hands of a dark immortal? Or will it be her first step to embracing the darkness within her?

Darkness Falls (Immortal Beloved 2), Cate Tiernan, September 5

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

Sweet Venom, Tera Lynn Childs, September 6, 2011

*SWEET SWEET SWEET

To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.

Vanish, Sophie Jordan, September 6, 2011

The Legend of Beka Cooper gives Tamora Pierce's fans exactly what they want—a smart and savvy heroine making a name for herself on the mean streets of Tortall's Lower City—while offering plenty of appeal for new readers as well.

Beka and her friends will face their greatest and most important challenge ever when the young heir to the kingdom vanishes. They will be sent out of Corus on a trail that appears and disappears, following a twisting road throughout Tortall. It will be her greatest Hunt—if she can survive the very powerful people who do not want her to succeed in her goal.

My Best of 2011 List

In 2009 I decided to step away reviewing for publishers and publicists. I felt like I was losing my focus and drifting from my mission statement of sharing the joys of reading. Call it taking a librarian's approach to blogging. Come see what I mean.

I had not heard of any of these before. They all look wonderful though. I am adding them to my want list right now!

That's a nice list of books! Wonderful, so much to look forward to. I generally don't know what's coming up so I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find a new book by a favorite author.

@leeswammes--It's weird, because my first thought was that I don't usually keep track, either--I usually don't know about the new books/authors until they're on the shelf--and then a second later I remembered I had all these favorites that I've been super excited about!!!--I always (stalk) keep track of my favorite authors, because I can never get enough!!!
