Wednesday's Weekly Word (4)

Hello Everybody!!!!  Happy Wednesday!!!!

I'm super excited!!!!! Because this week I'm hosting
Wednesday's Weekly Word

Wednesday's Weekly Word is a new meme created by The Young 1, inspired by the idea of learning something new everyday and making little changes to improve your life.

The Rules:
Find a new word to yourself
— Post the meaning of the word
— Link your post to the link tool at the bottom
— That's it!

#facepalm

I was all excited, because The Young 1's word last week was nocturnal.  I used to work at a summer camp, and the Camp Director used to have nature questions posted on the bulletin board.  If you gave him the correct answer, you'd win an ice cream cone!
My favorite question was, “Animals who sleep during the day are called nocturnal; what do you call those that sleep at night?”

Answer: Diurnal

And if I hadn’t been so excited about knowing the opposite of nocturnal, maybe I would have noticed the last part of the definition…which is “as oppose to diurnal.”

Well, since the challenge is actually supposed to be learning words that are new to me, instead of flaunting ones that I already know… I suppose it serves me right!!! lol.

Ok, new word:

INIMICALadj. [LL inimicalis, fr. L inimicus enemy] (1573)

1:  being adverse often by reason of hostility or malevolence
2a: having the disposition of an enemy: HOSTILE <~ factions>
b:  reflecting or indicating hostility:  UNFRIENDLY

ex: "the Pendletons are naturally conservative and inimical to change." p87 (digitized, 1912 ed.)

Daddy Long-Legs, Jean Webster, 1912

Happy Wednesday Everyone!!!!  Learn something new, and link it up!!!!

Fins Are Forever Release Day!!!!!

Ok, so this is the day I’ve been waiting for—ever since I pressed the page-turn button and saw “EPILOGUE” written in bold letters in the upper-center of the page—And not the kind of EPILOGUE where everyone gets married and lives happily-ever-after, but the kind of EPILOGUE-cliff-hanger where it looks like something catastrophic may or may not happen, but you don’t know, because the page-turn button appears to be malfunctioning and there don’t seem to be anymore words left at the end of the book to tell you what has happened and what is going to happen and the only solution (aside from flinging your precious book across the room in frustration) is to wait patiently for another year until the sequel comes out and you can find out just what kind of trouble these crazy characters have gotten themselves into now, and more importantly, how are they going to get out of it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Yeah, that day—The FINTASMICALLY epic release of Tera Lynn Childs Fins Are Forever, the highly anticipated seaquel sequel to last summer’s splash hit Forgive My Fins!

Wait—did I say the day I’ve been waiting for?—I meant the day you’ve been waiting for!

I’ve already got my copy!!!  Due to my crafty ninja skills, I was able to acquire an ARC from Tera Lynn Childs, herself. (and yes, FTC this IS my honest, uninfluenced opinion!!!!)

***Fins Are Forever is a seaquel sequel, but every attempt is being made to keep this spoiler-free.***

Backstory:  Forgive My Fins (super-über-cute and a totally fun summer read—now is the perfect time to pick it up if you haven’t read it yet!!!)  I think Fins Are Forever is structured well-enough, that it could be read by itself, without the reader getting lost—but unless you are currently stranded on a deserted island or trapped in some remote location with no link to the outside world, I totally recommend reading the two together—they’re such great companion pieces; trust me, you’ll want to read them both!!!

Lilly is half mermaid-princess, half human.  In Forgive My Fins Lilly turns her whole world upside-down and inside-out.  In Fins Are Forever, Lilly finally thinks she’s got her life straightened out again…That is, until Dosinia, Lilly’s cousin (and the bane of Lilly’s underwater existence) shows up.  On land.   Now Lilly’s life is being turned upside-down all over again, and she can’t help but wonder if she made the right choices.  Are there some things more important than love?  Can Lilly find a way to have both?  And graduate high school?

I can’t tell you all the emotions that welled up inside me when my pretty little ARC came.  My first thought was disbelief.  I would look at it, then put it back, thinking maybe it was a mistake or a trick, and not believing that I could really really really read it.  And then I wanted to hide it and protect it, so that nothing would happen to it.  I kept taking it out of the shipping box, so that I could stare at it in awe, and then putting it back in, as if it were some stolen treasure.  And then taking it back out again to look at it.  But keeping it close with me always.

It was funny, because I had been SO anxious, for SO long about reading Fins Are Forever, but when I finally had the book in my hands, I wanted the feeling to last.  I’m a fast reader.  And I’m impatient.  I don’t like to sit around wondering what’s going to happen, I just want to read faster; find out faster.  And I was afraid as soon as I started reading Fins Are Forever, I would devour it.

And OMG. I DID.  Once I started and was back in the world of Lilly and Quince, I. COULD. NOT. STOP. READING.  I saved it especially for a road trip.  I remember getting in the car, buckling my seatbelt, and occasionally mumbling “uh huh,” or trying to say semi-coherent things, pretending not to be completely tuning my sister out…you know, while I completely tuned her out.  She’s a reader, too; she understands.

Understands what it is like to find an amazingly fresh, sweet, funny, tender, romantic, magical, one-in-a-million kind of book and be absolutely swept off your feet, and fall-in-love-with-it kind of book.  *sigh*

I’ve been in love with Tera’s books since I picked up Oh.My.Gods.  Forgive My Fins was so good I don’t know if I’ve ever been so angry at a book for ending.  So, I mean, I was kind of expecting to fall in love with Fins Are Forever.  I was expecting it to be good.  It never entered my mind that I wouldn't love it, or that it wouldn’t be good.

So what surprised me was, not only did I absolutely fall in love with Fins Are Forever—Not only was it good—It was even better!!!!

And hopefully more to come!!!! *crosses fingers for infinite sequels*

It was so magical to be back in Lilly’s world again, and so much fun!!!!!!   I absolutely recommend Fins Are Forever as a totally fintasmic splashtastically awesome summer read!!!!

Download it now or transport yourself to your nearest bookstore.  Because. It. Is. Good!

p.s. Don't forget, to celebrate the release of Fins Are Forever, I'm hosting my own Fintastic FINS ARE FOREVER TLC Swag Giveaway!!!!

Tera Lynn Child's Mermaid Cupcake Contest

Are you as über-excited about the release of Tera Lynn Childs Fins Are Forever!?!??!!?!? TOMORROW?!?!!?!?!??!

You should be. Because it is FINTASMIC. And I do not use that word lightly.

*sigh* I dove in and absolutely devoured it! And…speaking of devouring things…. Tera is hosting a delicious new contest to celebrate TOMORROW’S release of Fins Are Forever!!!!
On Lily Sanderson’s eighteenth birthday she’ll become just a girl—still a mergirl, true, but signing the renunciation will ink Princess Waterlily of Thalassinia out of existence. That leaves plain old Lily living on land, dating the boy she loves, and trying to master this being-human thing once and for all.

Now that Lily and Quince are together, mer bond or not, she’s almost content to give up her place in the royal succession of Thalassinia. But just when she thinks she has everything figured out, the waves start to get rough. Lily’s father sends a certain whirlpool-stirring cousin to stay with her on land. What did Doe do to get herself exiled from Thalassinia and stuck in terraped form, when everyone knows how much she hates humans? And why why why is she batting her eyelashes at Lily’s former crush, Brody?

The seafoam on the raging surf comes when a merboy from Lily’s past shows up—Tellin asks Lily for something that clouds her view of the horizon. There’s a future with Quince on land, her loyalty to the kingdom in the sea, and Lily tossing on the waves in the middle. Will she find a way to reconcile her love, her duty, and her own dreams?

June 28, 2011 (TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!)(WooHoo!!!!)

Quiz time—two coolest things in the world?

Well, if you answered cupcakes and mermaids, then this fintabulous MERMAID CUPCAKE CONTEST is for YOU!!!!

And really, what could be more awesome than mermaid cupcakes????

So, what do you have to do?—Be as creative or as culinary as you like (although, in my sister’s case, the two don’t always combine into something edible…) ;)

THE ASSIGNMENT Share your best mermaid cupcake creation. Your design doesn't have to be baked in the kitchen, although that might be tastiest! You can draw or collage or sculpt out of clay or use any media you want. Whatever it takes to make a cupcake creation worthy of a mermaid princess.

THE PRIZES The top 10 entries will get a swag pack, with bookmarks, postcards, buttons, and mer mark temporary tattoos. The top 5 entries will also get a Fins book sets (a paperback copy of Forgive My Fins, with great extras in the back, and a hardcover copy of Fins Are Forever).

The easiest way to enter it on Facebook. Just go to Tera's author page, click on the Photo Contest tab and follow the instructions. But if you don't have Facebook, you can email your entry to tlc at teralynnchilds dot com and we will add your entry to contest.

Voting will start on July 3rd, so be sure to check back and vote for your favorite. I'll be picking winners and then announcing them on July 9th (or so).

So, seriously fintabulous—right?!?!?!?!

Well, you better get kraken, eh hm, crackin’ because I’ve already started!

I went down to my local ocean today, where all the mermaids were hangin’ out, so that I could stock up on supplies, and I found lots of good stuff!!!

Sea foam, seaweed, sea cucumbers, seagulls, and some stuff that vaguely resembles green French fries (I’ve decided that green means they’re ripe; yellow is mild, and red is SPICY!)  And of course some water straight from the ocean, sure to make my cupcakes both moist, and salty!!!!

Preheat the oven to 350°. Measure; assemble; mix; pour into cupcake pan.  Bake for 20 minutes.  And voila!  Cupcakes I’m sure any mermaid would enjoy!!!!  ;)

Best of luck to everyone who enters!!!!  And don’t forget, in honor of tomorrow’s Fins Are Forever release, I’m having my own Fintastic Fins Are Forever TLC Giveaway!!!!—where you can win some pretty awesome TLC swag to go with the most splashtastic read of the summer!!!! :D

Follow Friday (FF9) and Book Blogger Hop 7

Hoppy Friday Everyone!!!  Or Thursday, as the case may be… ;)

This is going to be another long day/night for me...Seriously, I don't know what it's all about, but I *LOVE* the midnight shows!!!!  For real, I don't even remember ever hearing about such a thing before Harry Potter.  And then Star Wars.  And Lord of the Rings.  And Twilight.  And Harry Potter.  And Twilight.  And Harry Potter....And then Pirates of the Caribbean.  And so I thought it was cool last week when Green Lantern did it.

But this week?Bad Teacher and Cars 2?  Um, ok.  Really???  But even better than the crowed midnight shows with the crazy-awesome fans in costume, are the lonely empty ones that most people didn't even know about.  Best. Seats. In. Da. House.  I am *SO* there!!!!

And now I'm back.  Decided on Cars 2.  In 3D.  Lots of fun!—Like Cars crossed with James Bond and Herbie The Love Bug.

HOW IT WORKS:
For anyone who’s new—Feature and Follow Friday is a weekly meet and greet meme hosted by ParaJunkee, where she features a blogger of the week, and all us awesome bloggers can hop around, introduce ourselves, and meet each other.

This week’s Featured blogger is Mickey from I'm a Book Shark—so be sure to check her out!!!

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Jennifer at Crazy For Books, and goes Friday through Monday.

If you want to join in the fun just hop on over to Parajunkee’s View for Feature and Follow Friday, or check out Crazy For Books for The Book Blogger HopThen just add your name to the list and start hopping!

Easy-peasy ;)
Now for the Q and A portion of this weekend:

Parajunkee asks:

Q. In light of the Summer Solstice. Also known as Midsummer...let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

A: While, yes, this question does happen to coincide nicely with next week’s (June 28) release of Tera Lynn ChildsFins Are Forever, hands down, my favorite (albeit Disnified) fairy tale is The Little Mermaid.  I still remember when I went to see it with my mom and my sister.  We had driven to Green Bay for school shopping and saw it right in the middle of the day!!!

*sigh*  The singing.  The swimming.  It was Disney at its most magical and I fell in love.

For anyone who’s seen Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the mermaid scenes are absolutely breathtaking—I didn’t used to think it was possible for live-action and special effects to capture the magic of what animation did for The Little Mermaid, but I could totally picture it after seeing the new Pirates!!!!

I am ALL about the mermaids!!!!

Crazy for Books question of the week is:
How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) Pile?

A:  Ok, I tallied it up the last time this question was asked, and between my physical bookshelves and my virtual nookshelves, I came up with somewhere around 1,000 books.  And over the many times I’ve cleared and re-cleared my desk, it seems to be a magnet for books; likewise, while I have been buying much fewer books than I used to, they are still creeping onto my bookshelves and nookshelves…Although, occasionally a burst of inspiration will hit me, and I’ll think of a bunch of books that I think should be free (and generally are, if I can find them), and all of a sudden I’ll have a bunch more for my little Nook.

What I’m saying is, that while I tried to veer towards estimating on the high-side, I don’ t know that it will ever get any smaller—I’m a voracious reader, and I’m only going to want to read more things, which means I’ll probably never catch up, but that I’ll have a lot of fun trying!!!!

Sweet dreams!!!!  Have a great weekend everybody!!!—And don’t forget to enter my Fintastic Fins Are Forever TLC Swag Giveaway!!!!

When my sister and I are running errands, I've taken to reading aloud to herIt annoys her less than me talking all the time (which I start doing when I get board), and it's been keeping us both very entertained!!!  I  stumbled (repeatedly) upon this marvelously fun wordand then of course my sister had to look at it too, and then I had to look it up Aristotelian, of course!!! *rolling my eyes*  I just find it funny that the word was used in such a manner, as if it were both commonly used and understoodwhich it may well have been.  Back in 1911, but not so much these days.

So guess what?!?!?!?  I'm having such a fun time with The Young 1, that we're going to alternate hosting Wednesday's Weekly Word!!!!!!  YAY!!!!!  I know; right?!?!?!!!!?  I'm super-psyched about it...and her post this week has even given me a great word for next week...But you'll have to wait 'til next week to see it!!!!!! :p

Eye Candy

In honor of next week’s fintastic, fintabulous, fintasmic release of Fins Are Forever (6/28/11), the seaquel sequel to last summer’s hit Forgive My Fins by picking up some other über-awesome reads from Tera Lynn Childs.

So I wanted to start with the sweetest one of all—Eye Candy!!!!

Eye Candy is about Lydia Vanderwalk, a candy-holic living a bitter-sweet life in the fashion world, because all her coworkers, family, and friends can talk about is her ex-boyfriend Gavin.  They broke up two years ago, so why can't everyone else get over it, already???  Lydia has.  And to prove it, she's invented a NEB, or non-existent boyfriend.  But it’s not long before her NEB needs to make a real-life appearance.  Enter Phelps, a yummy male model, and boyfriend-for-hire.

Last fall, Tera began releasing Eye Candy in weekly installments.  (Coincidentally, around the same time I started getting a sweet tooth…)   This book was absolutely D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S.

At first I was a little skeptical about reading in weekly installments, because I generally like to devour my books in one bite.  But since I am in love with all of Tera’s other books, I jumped at the chance to read something new!  And not surprisingly, I fell in love with Eye Candy, too!!!  I savored every mouthwatering chapter, then waited anxiously for the next!!!!

It easily could have been one of those clichéd girl-hires-pretend-boyfriend-to: impress her parents/boss/get a green card story, but instead it was something totally fresh and fun.  Despite her candy addiction, Lydia is skinny and pretty and has a great job—Her life should be perfect, except it’s not.  Three blondes straight out of college seem to be edging Lydia out of her job.  The promotion she’s been striving for is quickly fading from site.  And after two-years, Lydia’s friends, family, and her boss are still going on and on about Gavin—the one that got away—or lying cheating jerk, as Lydia thinks of him.

So, in a moment of complete exasperation, of wanting to simply change the subject after one too many conversations involving her ex, Lydia invents a completely new boyfriend.  But instead of shutting up her boss, the Jawbreaker, invites Lydia (and her non-existent bf) to the social event of the season.  Suddenly Lydia sees her promotion within her grasp again…just as her reputation is about to go up in flames…you know, because she made up a boyfriend…Which is when one of Lydia’s friends suggests hiring somebody for the weekend…which is how Lydia ends up with Phelps.  And suddenly Lydia’s life has flipped upside down, and nothing is what she thought—Could her blond office mates and her boss really be human?  Does she really even want the promotion she’s fought for so long?  Does Gavin deserve a second chance?  Is Phelps more than just a pretty package?  And could she be falling for them both????

Eye Candy is full of wonderfully rich and detailed characters, and though I was always on Lydia’s side, I loved getting the chance to see her really grow as a character.  There were so many fun and surprising things, that it was hard not to fall in love with this story.

And my favorite part of all, was when Tera decided to release Eye Candy as a self-published ebook for everybody to enjoy!!!!  *SQUEEEEEEEEEE*  And of course, it’s a perfect summer read!!!!  And since today *is* the first day of summer….I totally recommend it!!!!

The Wednesdays (3)

W...W...W... Wednesdays is a meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.  To Play along, Just answer the questions below and link your answers back in the comments section of her weekly post!

Wednesday's Weekly Word is a new meme hosted by The Young 1, inspired by the idea of learning something new everyday and making little changes to improve your life.

• What are you currently reading?
Don Juan by Lord Byron
• What did you recently finish reading?
Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma, —via Simon&Schuster Galley Grab, release date, 6/28
• What do you think you’ll read next?
I have no idea.  I have a lot of things at hand, and a couple of books for review, so I think I'll pick up one of those next!

And my weekly word?
JIVEn.
1. a. Jazz or swing music. b. The jargon of jazz musicians and enthusiasts.
2. Slang Deceptive, nonsensical, or glib talk: "the sexist, locker-room jive of men boasting and bonding" (Trip Gabriel).
v. jived, jiv·ing, jives
v.intr.
1. To play or dance to jive music.
2. Slang a. To talk nonsense; kid. b. To talk or chat: "You just jive in one big group, putting each other on, trying to top the last line" (Time).
v.tr. Slang To cajole or mislead. adj. Slang Misleading; phony.

The Free Dictionary

—I have to say I'm kind of loving this—I'm pretty good at inferring the meaning of a word from its context, but instead of skimming over things and guessing, I'm much more actively looking up definitions—And while I'm usually pretty close about what I thought a word meant, I'm finding it really interesting to discover some extra meanings and history behind some words!

This week's word came from a friend who was commenting about some Bee Gees' lyrics about all that "jive-talk" getting in your eye.  They were discussing whether the writers just put in words that fit the rhyme scheme or if there was some hidden truth to the lyrics.  Having just missed the age of disco, myself, I thought I'd take a refresher and look up "jive-talk."

Yeah, gotta say, the definition doesn't really add a lot of meaning for me—but now it's not just a guess! ;)

Aside from being more conscientious about learning new words, I'm also using Weekly Word as sort of an inspiration about doing little things that can lead to positive changes.  I was going to say that I didn't feel like I'd accomplished much in the last week—Then I took a look around and realized I've accomplished A LOT this week!—Just going through things a little bit at a time has made a *HUGE* dent in my to-do list!  Yay!!!! :)  Also, last week I started setting my alarm earlier.  I haven't always been getting up earlier, but I have been waking up feeling more refreshed and read to face the day, so good times!

Happy Wednesday Everyone!!!!
